What Does an Invoice Need to Include in Australia?

An invoice issued in Australia needs enough detail to identify both parties, the goods or services supplied, and the GST treatment if applicable. The exact requirements differ depending on whether you're GST registered (issuing a tax invoice) or not.

A basic Australian invoice should include:

  • Your business or trading name
  • Your ABN — legally required for invoices over $75 when carrying on an enterprise
  • The client's name and address
  • A unique invoice number
  • The date of issue
  • Description of items or services, with quantity and price
  • Total amount payable in AUD
  • Payment due date and accepted payment methods

If you're GST registered, the invoice must be labelled "Tax Invoice" and include the GST amount (or "Total includes GST"). For tax invoices of $1,000 or more, the buyer's identity or ABN is also required. Keep every invoice — sent and received — for at least five years to meet ATO record-keeping rules. Failure to include an ABN means the payer may have to withhold 47% under the No-ABN Withholding rule.
