Invoicing tips for artist

  • Spell out usage rights — personal use and commercial licensing should be priced separately
  • State how many revisions are included and the per-round fee for extras
  • Take a non-refundable deposit (often 30–50%) before starting and note it on the invoice
  • Clarify whether you retain copyright or the client receives full ownership
  • Charge a clearly stated rush fee for tight deadlines instead of absorbing the cost

Artist invoice FAQ

Should I require a deposit for commissions?

Yes. Most commission artists collect a non-refundable deposit of 30–50% before starting work to protect their time, then bill the remaining balance on delivery.

How do I charge for usage or licensing rights?

Price the artwork and the rights separately. Personal use can be your base fee, while commercial, advertising, or merchandise usage commands an additional licensing line based on scope and reach.

Do I keep copyright after a commission?

Unless your contract transfers it, artists retain copyright by default in the US. State clearly on the invoice whether the client is buying a license to use the work or full ownership of the copyright.

Do I charge sales tax on artwork?

Sales of tangible artwork (prints, originals) are usually taxable, while purely digital or licensing services may or may not be, depending on your state. Check your local rules.
