What Details Need to Be on an Invoice?

Clients and the ATO expect specific details on invoices. Missing fields cause payment delays or rejected tax claims.

Details needed on every invoice:

  • Seller identity — business name and ABN
  • Buyer identity — client name (and ABN for tax invoices over $1,000)
  • Invoice number and date of issue
  • Description of goods or services
  • Quantity and unit price, or agreed fixed price
  • Total amount due and payment due date
  • Payment instructions (BSB/account, BPAY, PayID, or card link)

For GST-registered businesses, also show GST amount or a statement that price includes GST. InvoiceSonic prompts for each field so nothing is missed.
