What Does a Tax Invoice Need?

A tax invoice needs specific fields required by the Australian Taxation Office so the buyer can claim a GST input tax credit. The required fields differ depending on whether the sale is under or over $1,000 (GST inclusive).

A tax invoice under $1,000 needs:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" displayed clearly
  • Your business name (or trading name)
  • Your ABN
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A description of items sold, including quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or a statement that the total includes GST
  • The total price payable in AUD

A tax invoice $1,000 or more also needs:

  • The buyer's identity or ABN

If you don't include these fields, the document isn't a valid tax invoice and your buyer can't claim the GST credit. Tax invoices must be issued within 28 days of a customer's request. Keep every tax invoice for at least five years. InvoiceSonic's tax invoice template includes every ATO-required field by default.
