What Information Needs to Be on a Tax Invoice?

An Australian tax invoice must include specific information set by the ATO so the buyer can claim a GST input tax credit. The required information differs depending on whether the sale is under or over $1,000 (GST inclusive).

For a tax invoice under $1,000, you must include:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" displayed clearly
  • The seller's business name (or trading name)
  • The seller's ABN
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A description of items sold, including quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or a statement that the total price includes GST
  • The total price payable in AUD

For a tax invoice $1,000 or more, you must also include:

  • The buyer's identity (business name) or ABN

If a customer requests a tax invoice, you must provide one within 28 days. Recipient-created tax invoices, adjustment notes, and supplies through agents have additional rules. Keep every tax invoice you issue for at least five years to meet ATO record-keeping requirements. InvoiceSonic's tax invoice template includes every required field by default.
