What Is a Tax Invoice?

A tax invoice is an invoice that meets specific requirements set by tax authorities — in Australia, the ATO — and is used to claim GST credits. Any GST-registered business issuing a sale of more than $82.50 (including GST) must provide a tax invoice when requested by the buyer.

For a sale of less than $1,000, an Australian tax invoice must include:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" clearly displayed
  • The seller's identity and ABN
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A brief description of the items sold, including quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or a statement that GST is included in the total
  • The total price payable

For sales of $1,000 or more, the buyer's identity or ABN must also be shown. A standard (non-tax) invoice can be used by businesses not registered for GST. Issuing a compliant tax invoice protects both sides — buyers can claim their input tax credit and sellers stay audit-ready. Create ATO-compliant tax invoices for free with InvoiceSonic.
