What Is Required on a Tax Invoice?

In Australia, a tax invoice must meet specific ATO requirements so the buyer can claim a GST credit and the seller stays compliant. The exact fields required depend on whether the sale is under or over $1,000 (GST inclusive).

For a tax invoice under $1,000, you must show:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" displayed prominently
  • The seller's identity (name or trading name)
  • The seller's ABN
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A brief description of items sold, including quantity and price
  • The GST amount, or a statement such as "Total price includes GST"
  • The total price payable

For a tax invoice $1,000 or more, you must also show:

  • The buyer's identity (name or business name) or the buyer's ABN

Recipient-created tax invoices and adjustment notes have additional rules. Issue the tax invoice within 28 days of the buyer's request if you didn't supply one at the time of sale. InvoiceSonic's tax invoice template includes every required field by default.
