What's a Tax Invoice?

A tax invoice is an invoice that meets the Australian Taxation Office's specific requirements and is used by GST-registered businesses. The buyer needs a valid tax invoice to claim a GST input tax credit on their BAS.

What makes an invoice a tax invoice:

It's clearly labelled "Tax Invoice"
It shows the seller's ABN
It includes the GST amount or states "Total price includes GST"
It has an issue date and a description of items sold
For sales of $1,000 or more, it also shows the buyer's identity or ABN

Only businesses registered for GST can issue tax invoices.
