What Needs to Be on an Invoice in Australia?

Australian invoices need to meet ATO record-keeping rules, and if you're GST registered they must be "tax invoices" with extra details. Issuing complete, accurate invoices is essential for BAS, tax returns, and avoiding the No-ABN Withholding rule.

A complete Australian invoice includes:

  • The word "Invoice" or "Tax Invoice" (if GST registered)
  • Your business name and ABN
  • Your contact details — address, phone, email
  • A unique sequential invoice number
  • The issue date
  • The client's name and billing address
  • Description of each item, quantity, unit price, and line total
  • Subtotal, GST (if registered), and total amount payable in AUD
  • Payment due date and payment methods (bank, BPAY, PayID)
  • For tax invoices over $1,000: the buyer's identity or ABN

Without an ABN, clients are required to withhold 47% of your payment under No-ABN Withholding. Keep every invoice — sent and received — for at least five years. InvoiceSonic includes every required field by default and is designed for Australian businesses.
