Tips

FAQs

Do freelancers need an ABN to invoice?

You don't legally need one for invoicing, but without an ABN your clients must withhold 47% PAYG. Getting an ABN is free at abr.gov.au and takes 15 minutes.

Do freelancers need to charge GST?

Only if your turnover exceeds $75,000 per year. Below that, GST is optional. The template handles both cases.

How do I track which invoices have been paid?

For 1-5 invoices a month, a spreadsheet works fine. Beyond that, use a free invoice generator like InvoiceSonic which tracks paid/unpaid status automatically.

What payment terms should I use?

Net 14 is standard for freelance work in Australia. Net 7 for small invoices. For larger projects, request a deposit upfront and invoice the balance on delivery.
