To issue an Australian invoice you need: your business name (and ABN), your contact details, the buyer's name and address (and ABN if the sale is $1,000 or more), a unique invoice number, the issue date, line items describing the work or goods with quantities and prices, the subtotal, GST if you're registered, the total payable, payment terms, and your bank or payment details.
For a tax invoice (issued by GST-registered businesses for sales of $82.50+), the document must also include the words "Tax Invoice" and either show GST as a separate line or state "Total price includes GST". For sales of $1,000 or more, the buyer's identity (name, ABN, or address) is mandatory.
Sole traders use the same details with one specific: if you trade under a name different from your registered legal name, write "[Your Name] trading as [Business Name]".
