With any standalone generator, decide how you will retain the final document and track payment. A downloaded PDF is not, by itself, a receivables ledger or a reminder system. Keep a separate record of what you issued, when it is due and whether it has been paid.
3. Zoho’s free browser invoice generator
Zoho has a browser generator as well as its account-based Invoice product. The generator offers download and print controls; saving online and setting up a payment gateway lead into the account product. Do not treat those as the same signup requirement. Open Zoho’s generator.
Choose the correct country version and review the output. A generic currency selector or tax percentage does not determine the right tax treatment for your business.
4. Wave: free account-based invoice creation

Choose an account product if you want your invoice history organised in the same place as ongoing business records. If you only want a PDF today, that extra setup may not be necessary.
5. Square: when collecting payment is part of the job
Square offers a free software starting point, with payment processing charged separately. Compare its US invoicing product or Australian version. Local plans and fees differ.
Choose a payment-connected invoice because it fits how your customer wants to pay. “Free to create” does not mean the money reaches you without deductions, and a rate for an in-person card reader may not be the rate for an online invoice.
6. Bookipi: a limited free account for occasional documents
Bookipi’s free account allows three document creations per month. Its FAQ explains that this can include invoices and other document types, so a quote and invoice may both consume capacity. Check the document allowance and branding terms.

Use this fictitious, tax-exclusive example to test a generator. The 10% tax is an arithmetic assumption, not advice that your sale should be taxed at that rate.

The invoice total and balance due are different. Record the 150 payment separately; do not turn it into a discount just to force the balance to 400. A discount changes the agreed charge, while a payment settles part of it. Check how the selected tool represents each before using it for a real job.
Add a clear reference such as “Sample job — invoice TEST-001”, an issue date, a due date and payment instructions. Use fictitious names while evaluating tools, then create the real invoice with verified client details.
