What to include in your quote

Your ABN

Include it on the quote. It signals you're a legitimate registered business and carries across to the tax invoice.

GST shown correctly

If you're registered, show the 10% GST. If you're not, don't charge it — and say the price includes no GST so there's no confusion.

Itemised work

Labour, materials and callout separated out. Itemised quotes get accepted; lump sums get negotiated.

Validity period

"Valid for 30 days" protects you from material price movement and prompts a decision.

Deposit and payment terms

State the deposit and payment window up front — agreed before the job, not chased after it.

Exclusions

What's not included: rubbish removal, permits, making good. This is where most AU trade disputes start.

How it works

  1. 1

    Add your business and ABN

Entered once and remembered. Your ABN appears on both the quote and the invoice it becomes.

  2. 2

Set GST to match your registration

Registered for GST? Switch it on and 10% is calculated for you. Under the $75,000 threshold? Leave it off and the quote is labelled correctly.

  3. 3

List the work and set your terms

Add line items, validity period, deposit and exclusions. Totals calculate themselves.

  4. 4

    Send it, then convert it

Email the quote. When accepted, convert it to a tax invoice that meets ATO requirements.

Quote accepted? Send the tax invoice

Convert your quote into an ATO-compliant tax invoice with GST and ABN already in place.

Frequently asked questions

Does a quote need to include GST in Australia?

If you're registered for GST you must show it, and it's best practice to state whether your prices include or exclude GST — ambiguity here is a common source of disputes. If you're not registered, don't charge GST, and say the price includes none.

Do I need an ABN to send a quote?

You can quote without one, but you should get an ABN if you're operating a business. Without it, business clients may be required to withhold 47% of the payment. An ABN is free from the Australian Business Register.

Is a quote legally binding in Australia?

A quote is generally an offer at a fixed price, and once the client accepts it you're usually bound to that price. That's why validity dates and clear exclusions matter — and why you should give an estimate instead when the scope isn't settled.

What's the difference between a quote and a tax invoice?

A quote is what a job will cost, sent before the work. A tax invoice is the request for payment after it, and for sales over A$82.50 including GST it must carry specific details — the words "Tax invoice", your identity and ABN, the date, a description, and the GST amount.

How do I turn a quote into a tax invoice?

Convert it in InvoiceSonic. The client, line items, GST and your ABN all carry across into a numbered, ATO-compliant tax invoice you can send straight away.
