Hnry Review 2026: Fees, Pros and Cons, and Who It Suits

October 28, 2026

Hnry review 2026: what the 1% + GST fee (capped at A$1,650) really costs at your income, honest pros and cons, what users say, and the best alternatives.

Our Hnry review in one line: it's a good deal for sole traders who want their tax handled and earn under about A$100,000, and a poorer deal for higher earners and for anyone who wants control of their cash. Hnry charges 1% + GST of every payment into your Hnry Account, capped at A$1,500 + GST (A$1,650) a year. For that fee it works out and pays your income tax, Medicare levy and GST as you get paid, and lodges your BAS and tax return as your registered tax agent.

All the facts below come from Hnry's Australian pricing page and service agreement, which we read in October 2026. Where we describe what users say, we've summarised public reviews rather than quoting them. InvoiceSonic publishes this review. We make an invoicing app, which is one of the alternatives listed at the end, and we don't offer tax services.

What Hnry does

Hnry is an accounting service, a business account and an app in one, built for Australian sole traders. You give clients your Hnry Account details. Each time a payment lands, Hnry calculates and holds back your tax, then passes the rest on to you. Hnry calls itself Australia's largest accounting service for sole traders.

  • Tax as you earn. Hnry deducts income tax, Medicare levy, GST and any student loan repayment from each payment. It adjusts the rate through the year based on what you earn and what you claim.
  • Registrations and lodgements. Hnry can register you for an ABN, GST and PAYG instalments, and it lodges your BAS and income tax return. Because an individual lodges one return, that return can include your salary or casual income too.
  • Invoices and quotes. You can send unlimited invoices and quotes from the app, with your branding, schedule them ahead, and Hnry chases late payers for you.
  • Expenses. You log expenses in the app, or spend on the Hnry Business Mastercard and they're raised automatically. A separate mileage app is free for customers.
  • Allocations. You can send part of each payment automatically to savings, super or investments.

Hnry doesn't list payroll among its features, so it isn't built for paying employees.

How much does Hnry cost?

Hnry costs 1% + GST of each payment into your Hnry Account, capped at A$1,500 + GST a year. There's no subscription, so if you earn nothing in a month you pay nothing that month. Hnry says it has never raised its prices.

A few extra charges sit outside the 1% fee:

  • Card payments: 1.45% per transaction (minimum A$0.25) from 4 October 2026, on top of the 1% fee. Online card payment is switched on by default on Hnry invoices, but you can turn it off for all clients, one client or a single invoice.
  • Small payments: payments under A$50 attract a minimum fee of A$0.50 + GST each. Hnry suggests batching small payments.
  • One-off lodgement fees: these can apply if you join within 45 days of 30 June, approve your tax return late, need returns from years before you joined, or provide incomplete information.
  • Income paid elsewhere: self-employed income you receive outside Hnry is still charged at 1% + GST under the service agreement.

Leaving costs nothing; Hnry says there's no fee to stop using it.

Hnry cost at different incomes

Hnry's fee grows with your income until it reaches A$1,650 a year (GST included), which happens at A$150,000 of payments. Here's what it costs at common income levels, compared with doing it yourself in software:

Payments into Hnry a yearHnry fee (incl. GST)Per monthXero Ignite (A$444 a year)Rounded Pro (A$359.40 a year)
A$30,000A$330A$27.50A$444A$359.40
A$60,000A$660A$55A$444A$359.40
A$90,000A$990A$82.50A$444A$359.40
A$120,000A$1,320A$110A$444A$359.40
A$150,000 or moreA$1,650 (cap)A$137.50A$444A$359.40

This isn't a like-for-like comparison. Xero and Rounded are software you run yourself. They don't lodge your tax return, so you either lodge it yourself or pay a tax agent on top. The useful question is how much you'd pay an accountant for your BAS and return. If it's more than the gap in this table, Hnry is likely cheaper.

Two adjustments make Hnry slightly cheaper than the table suggests:

  • GST credit. If you're registered for GST, you can usually claim the GST on Hnry's fee as a credit, so the real cost is the 1%.
  • Tax deduction. The fee is a business expense, and Hnry claims it for you automatically.

Also check whether your income figure includes GST. If you're registered for GST, Hnry's fee is worked out on the payments your clients make into the account.

Hnry pros

Hnry's biggest strength is that you never face a surprise tax bill, because tax comes out of every payment before you can spend it.

  • No tax surprises. Income tax, Medicare levy and GST are calculated and paid as you earn, not in one lump at the end of the year.
  • Lodgements included. BAS and your income tax return are lodged by Hnry, a registered tax agent, as part of the fee.
  • No subscription. The fee follows your income, which suits seasonal or part-time sole traders.
  • Everything in one app. Invoicing, quotes, expenses, mileage and reports are included. Hnry says banks and brokers accept its reports for loan applications.
  • Your tax money is held in trust. The service agreement says tax funds are held in trust until Hnry pays them to the ATO.
  • Easy to leave. There's no exit fee, and you can download your financial statements and reports.

Hnry cons

Hnry's main drawback is cost at higher incomes. Close behind is that your income has to run through Hnry.

  • Expensive above about A$100,000. At the A$1,650 cap, Hnry costs nearly four times as much as Xero Ignite. The difference may or may not exceed what an accountant would charge you.
  • All self-employed income must go through Hnry. Income you take outside Hnry is still charged at 1% + GST, and not paying it can lead to Hnry ending the service.
  • Less control over cash flow. Tax is held back before you receive the money. That's the point of the service, but it can feel tight if you're used to managing tax yourself.
  • Card fees are on by default. Card payments cost 1.45% on top of the 1% fee unless you turn them off.
  • Lodgement needs a track record. Hnry lodges your BAS and return only after you've been paid into your Hnry Account regularly for 90 consecutive days, or after you pay a one-off fee.
  • Hnry keeps the interest. Any interest earned on funds held in trust goes to Hnry, not to you.
  • Liability is capped. Hnry's liability is limited to the fees you paid in the previous 12 months.

Hnry reviews: what users say

Hnry reviews are mostly positive. When we checked on 28 October 2026, the Hnry app had a 4.1 rating from 276 ratings on the Australian App Store. Hnry's own site shows a 4.7 Trustpilot score.

Across Trustpilot reviews and independent write-ups, the same themes come up:

  • Praise: peace of mind, not having to think about BAS, no end-of-year tax bill, and a simple app.
  • Complaints: slow support responses around tax time, a fiddly setup when importing past records, occasional trouble tracing a client payment, and the cost compared with flat-fee software for higher earners.

Reviews are self-selected, so treat them as a guide to what to watch rather than a verdict.

Who Hnry suits

Hnry suits sole traders who value never thinking about tax more than they value keeping costs to a minimum.

  • New sole traders who don't yet know how much tax to set aside
  • Contractors and freelancers earning under about A$100,000 a year
  • People with a salary as well as side income, who want one return lodged for them
  • Anyone who has been caught out by a tax bill before

Hnry suits less well if you:

  • earn well over A$100,000 and are comfortable setting tax aside yourself
  • already have an accountant you like
  • pay employees
  • take a lot of income that can't easily be paid into a Hnry Account

Hnry alternatives

The main alternatives to Hnry are accounting software with a tax agent, or an invoicing app plus a tax agent. The first is cheaper at higher incomes, and the second is cheaper still if you're not registered for GST. Prices below were checked in October 2026, in AUD.

If you want something other than a percentage-of-income service, our Hnry alternative comparison sets out the trade-offs in detail. Frequently asked questions

Is Hnry worth it?
Hnry is worth it if you'd otherwise pay an accountant for your BAS and tax return, or you struggle to set tax aside. At A$60,000 of income it costs A$660 a year with lodgements included. Above about A$100,000, software plus a tax agent is often cheaper.

How much does Hnry charge?
Hnry charges 1% + GST of each payment into your Hnry Account, capped at A$1,500 + GST a year. Card payments add 1.45% (minimum A$0.25), and payments under A$50 have a minimum fee of A$0.50 + GST.

Does Hnry hold my money?
Your payments go into your Hnry Account. Hnry holds back the tax portion in trust until it pays the ATO, then passes the rest to you or to your chosen allocations. Any interest earned on funds held in trust goes to Hnry.

Does Hnry do my tax return?
Yes. Hnry is a registered tax agent and lodges your BAS and income tax return as part of its fee. It starts once you've been paid regularly into your Hnry Account for 90 consecutive days; before that, a one-off fee may apply.

Can I stop using Hnry?
Yes. Hnry says there's no fee to stop using the service. You can download financial statements, expense summaries and pay summaries from the Reports section of your account.

Is the Hnry fee tax deductible?
Yes. The fee is a business expense, and Hnry says it claims it for you automatically. If you're registered for GST, you can usually also claim the GST on the fee as a credit.

Facts were checked on hnry.com.au, including its service agreement, on 28 October 2026. Fees can change with 30 days' notice. This is general information, not tax or financial advice.
